Will the increase in the price of magnesium lead to an increase in the price of Nitinol alloy?

We all know that nitinol alloy is mainly composed of nickel and titanium, but will the increase in the price of magnesium lead to an increase in the price of titanium?I will take you to understand the relationship between magnesium and nitinol alloys.

The industrial production of titanium sponge has been more than 70 years since 1948. At present, the only titanium-making method used in industrial production in the world is still the KROLL method, also known as the magnesium heat method. The production process mainly includes the preparation of enriched materials, chlorination, refining of titanium tetrachloride, reducing distillation, and electrolysis of magnesium chloride. The essence of magnesium reduction is that in an argon atmosphere at 880℃~950℃, titanium tetrachloride is reacted with magnesium metal to obtain sponge-like titanium metal and magnesium chloride. Vacuum distillation removes magnesium chloride and excess magnesium from sponge titanium to obtain pure titanium. The distilled condensate can be melted to recover metal magnesium, and magnesium chloride can be recovered by molten salt electrolysis. Magnesium and chlorine gas.

The cost composition of titanium sponge enterprises is also different, and the cost of titanium sponge in full-process enterprises is significantly better than that of semi-process enterprises. After the magnesium chloride is electrolysis, the loss of magnesium and chlorine is not large, and only magnesium and chlorine need to be added. This is because for the whole process, the price increase of magnesium has little impact on the cost of titanium sponge. However, for the semi-process, it has a greater impact on the cost of titanium sponge, because the magnesium chloride produced in the semi-process does not have electrolysis or chlorination, and can only be sold cheaply. However, if the whole process is produced with electrolysis and chlorination, the magnesium and chlorine gas can be recovered, so that only the loss of magnesium and the loss of chlorine gas need to be supplemented. At present, only two or three domestic sponge titanium companies are full-process in the true sense, and the others are semi-processes.

In summary, it can be seen that the price increase of magnesium will definitely be a fatal blow to the survival of semi-process titanium sponge enterprises, and the price of titanium is also affected. Therefore, there is a certain relationship between the price of nitinol and the price of magnesium.
